Empowering Students to Succeed

Lydia - Empowered Student

Before enrolling at LUA, Freddy Martinez frequently skipped class and was involved in fights at his local high school. Although old enough to be a senior, he had only 10 of the 24 credits needed for graduation.

Searching for solutions, his mother enrolled him in LYDIA Urban Academy, where he determined to make a fresh start. Eventually, Freddy earned the opportunity for a work-study janitorial position with Albany Park Community Center.

Under the guidance of his supervisor, Rodney Walker, Freddy is demonstrating outstanding work skills. According to Rodney, he is a responsible youth who follows instruction well and asks for more tasks after completing his assigned work.

Rodney sees the work-study arrangement as mutually beneficial to students and employers.

"It's more than just a work program, but an investment in Freddy to encourage him along his life journey," he explains.

In addition to the work skills and experience he is gaining, Freddy especially values Rodney's personal involvement. "Mr. Rodney helps me a lot. He's trying to help me get into a technical training program after I graduate. He's a real nice guy...like a mentor to me."
